The fact that the occurrence of dental allergies is still significantly under-diagnosed has two reasons. Titanium does not provide solution for everyone

Among the metals used in the dentistry the nickel, chromium, cobalt, gold, and copper can cause mostly allergic reactions. The gold has been demonstrated in the 80s that in dental implants it may provoke allergic reactions by susceptible patients. Therefore the implants are produced by using titanium which is known as hypoallergenic material. In the recent years more and more cases showed that in orthopedics and dentistry applied titanium implants can also cause allergic reactions The main symptoms of allergic reactions caused by titanium are thy type I and IV: burning and tingling feeling, with dry mouth or without it, taste loss, or other general symptoms, such as headache, gastritis, weight loss, joint pain, muscle pain. Sign of oral allergy can be reddening of the skin, lip edema, bleeding in the palate, mouth ulcers, gingivitis, geographic tongue, painful cracking of the corner of mouth, eczema lesions around the mouth, or lichenoid reactions of oral mucosa.

The metal allergy is preventable

It can be justified with the metal allergy test. It is highly recommended to do the test before dental interventions, mainly by those patients who previously had allergic reactions for metals. In the case of metal allergy the only treatment method is if we avoid the usage of metal objects.

For this reason we can easily change watch, or belt, earring, but from the implanted implants we can rid of only in a very costly and painful way. Therefore it is worth to make metal allergy test before the implantation. The examination is essential in such case when the patient has already lost one or implant, by these patients nearly 50 % are confirmed metal allergy.

The allergen metal can be detected using epicutan test. During the test we stuck onto the patient’s healthy back skin the chambered patches with the test materials.

The reading happens 24. 48. and 72. hour after the application.

The examination is completely painless, but its through completion takes 8 days. The test is highly recommended for metal allergic patients in order to prevent future problems, and before bigger dental procedures, such as implant, tooth implantation, fillings.
