Why Pécs?

European Capital of Culture in 2010

Pécs in its ancient name Sopianae is the county capital of Baranya County. It has more than 156 000 inhabitants; it is the fifth largest city of Hungary. The north part of the city is located on the slopes of Mecsek Mountains.

It is accessible from Budapest on the M6 and the M60 motorway within 2 hours. Furthermore, direct bus or train connection is available between the capital city and Pécs. The Pogány Airport of Pécs which fulfills international and regional role now receives more business people’ private planes, in the summer season smaller charter planes provide the airport traffic.

The city's climate is very pleasant Mediterranean. Nothing proves this better than the average temperature and the number of hours of sunshine.

Pécs became the title European Capital of Culture – together with Istanbul and Essen - in 2010. As a result many of new centers was built up, like the Knowledge Center which is the city’s university library; the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, and the Kodály Center which usually hosts concerts. Until 2010 several parks and public squares were conjured into more beautiful, which have positive effect on the city’s total image. This honorable title has launched an enormous development in Pécs; including new hotels and office buildings have been built.

The University of Pécs is the oldest university in the country with its 34,000 students. The students also obtain college (BA,BSc), master (MA,MSc) and doctorate (PHD, DLA) degree. Due to the dynamic, interoperable higher education system the campus has a lot of foreign students as well.

Due to the colorful nationals of Baranya (Croatian, German, Szekler) the food is also characterized by diversity. Many types of fruits grow in the area (apples, plums, pears, grapes etc.), so a lot of people in the region deal with making wine and schnaps. Thanks to the Danube and Drava the fish dishes also goes back a long tradition. Usually catfish, pike, carp, and beam are served in the charming riverside restaurants.

The cultural life of Pécs is outstanding in many ways.

The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter was created under the project of Pécs 2010 European Capital of Culture which contains a number of cultural events, and institutions. In the refurbished building complex of former Zsolnay factory and its surroundings on 5 ha got place the special cultural sights of Pécs.

Cella Septichora

The early Christian funerary buildings are a member of World Heritage Site by UNESCO since December 2000. The early Christian community was formed a significant number of tomb edifice such as chapels and crypts in their former cemetery. This archaeological exhibition place is located near to the Cathedral - it is situated in the north-western part of Pécs.

You can see such famous museums and exhibitions in Pecs, such as Csontváry Museum, Gyugyi collection, Vasarely Museum, Marzipan Museum, Saracen Pharmacy, Pharmacy Museum, Cathedral Museum and Roman Lapidary, City Museum and the Zsolnay Art Manufactory.

Zoo of Pécs and Auarium-Terrarium

The Zoo of Pécs opened its doors to visitors in 1960. The zoo is located in the Mecsek Mountain, in the north area of the city; in its 3.5 hectare area 250 specimens of 57 animal species can be seen. Come and visit us, because hundreds of interesting animal can be observed from the exotic animals to the small predators. The Aquarium-Terrarium which lies under the downtown of Pécs awaits its visitors since 1985. In the cellar there is 27-28 °C degrees warm throughout the year. 800 specimens of 138 animal species can be seen, ranging from the small fishes to the giant snakes.

Mecsextreme Park

One of the largest adventure parks of the country is located in the Mecsek forest. Alpine rope park, bobsleigh with 25 cars, 8 meter high climbing wall, 100 m2 play house, and many other games are waiting for their guests!

Villány Wine Region

The Villány Wine Region is one of the most developed wine producing regions in Hungary. In our southernmost located wine region, the grapes are produced approximately on 2,100 hectares. Villány is primarily famous about its stout, hot red wines. The wine cellars of Villány are popular destination of tourists as well. The impressive row of cellar which located in two rows looks to the main street of Villány. The greater wineries have theirown modern cellars and processors, but we can visit traditional wine storages also.

Orfű

Orfű is located in the Western Mecsek, about 14 km from Pécs. Its main attraction is the three dammed artificial lakes; namely the Orfű, Pécs and the Lake Herman. The first two is a kind of touristic lake, while the latter is more like landscaping; swimming is forbidden, and people can only fishing on it. The other attraction of the village is behind the lake Orfű, it is the Mill Museum. The visitors’ relaxation, fun is served by the beaches, riding arenas, sports fields as well. On the lakes there are fishing, boating, kayaking, and sailing opportunities. A new aqua park was built in the place of the old beach, which expanded with 33 meters swimming pool, 1400 m2 area of swimming pool, jakuzzi, children’s pool and 7 water slides.

Harkány

Healing water: In the Harkány Thermal Bath not only the spontaneous effect of the healing water prevails. Its natural conditions are excellent: its favorable climate, the micro-climate of the bath, and the 2100 to 2200 sunshine hours yearly are great components of a carefully planned bath therapy.

In 2003, the completely renovated bath ensures the healing for their guests with a half-covered and an outdoor thermal pool with total 2,098 m2 water surfaces, 110-153 cm water depth and 34-38 C° water temperature. The healing water of Harkány is the gift of nature! The Harkány Thermal Bath which is famous and unique in Europe has 200 years old history. It is waiting their guests with the water composition of alkaline, contains hydrocarbonate and sulphur, the premises are located in a 13.5-hectare natural park, the water surface area is almost 8000 m², the covered rest area is about 5000 m².
