I am not a heavy smoker, but I am interested in that I have to brush my teeth more often after smoking, even if I didn’t eat anything? Or smoking has no harmful effect?

The effect of smoking to the oral cavity

Unfortunately, I have to say that smoking has serious effects to your teeth and to the oral cavity. Did you know that the cigarette smoke and nicotine:

• include more than four thousand compounds, which are toxic and absorbed through the lining of the mouth
• reduce the operating efficiency of the oral cavity’s local defense system, thus the mouth is more prone to diseases
• significantly impair the circulation of mucous membrane, thereby damaging the normal functioning of cells
• accelerate the formation of calculus and badly discolor the teeth?

Smoking is primarily not responsible for dental caries

It does not cause primarily tooth decay, but destroys the periodontium, causes bone destruction around the teeth, which leads to loosening and loss of teeth.

So from this viewpoint the tooth brushing – but it reduces some negative factors’ efficiency - does not protect your teeth from the harmful effects of smoking. Who smokes 5-10 cigarettes per day, the development of severe periodontal disease is three times bigger compared to non-smokers (so you don’t have to be heavy smoker)

The most important thing left to the end: daily 5 cigarettes increase ten times the chance of development of oral cancer (only 5 cigarettes!). In 2000 in Hungary approx. 1700 people died because of oral cancer. Not to mention the other diseases (heart attack, lung cancer) related to smoking.
