The treatment has practically no upper age limit. In any cases at the treatments – rare exceptions – we make at the same time on the upper and lower arch treatment, because almost everybody has some bite difference, otherwise its setting is not possible. With the fixed orthodontic devices usually 100 % result can be achieved.
How does it look like the fixed orthodontic device?
The fixed orthodontic devices consist of several components. To the incisor teeth, premolar teeth, canines so called brackets (these are bonded paws to the teeth), to the molar teeth so called tubes (these are greater paws than the brackets) will be bonded. To the molar teeth may glue also so called band, but with tube the tooth is much easier keep clean and it is easier to wear for the patient.
The so called arch connects the teeth – so the brackets and tubes -, which is regularly exchanged, because in the different phases of the treatment different arch’s type is needed. In simple terms, we move along the arch through the brackets and tubes the teeth, start from the thin arches to the thicker and stronger ones. The gluing can happen separately – 1-2 weeks apart, thus easier to get used to it - or at the same time to the upper and lower dental arch. The removal happens at the same time at the end of the treatment’s active phase.
Disadvantage of the fixed orthodontic device (transient)
After gluing, depends on the device’s position (external or internal) it hurts the patient’ mouth and/or tongue and the teeth are also sensitive, especially during chewing, biting, therefore the chewing and biting is more difficult, depends on the individual sensitivity, and so called pain threshold.
In that case if any problem occurs with the wearing of the device – any glued bracket, tube or occlusal comes down, any part of the device breaks, prickles, cuts, especially hurts a tooth, hurts the mandibular joint, etc. – immediately contact your doctor! Otherwise the problem may severe, or it may hinder the treatment in time!
Soft power orthodontics, Damon-technique:
The external fixed device technique is developed by the American Dr. Dwight Damon.
Wherein differs the Damon system from the traditional orthodontic treatment?
Its characteristic is, that contrast with the traditional operating fixed appliances the fixation of the teeth arc connecting is not made with rubber or wire elements in the so called brackets, but there are so called self-locking brackets and tubes, which can be open and close like interlock.
At the old, traditional rubber wiring with today’s point of view there was a very large friction between the arch and the fasten element, thus very great forces were required to implement the desired tooth movements.
Why is pleasing the Damon technique for you?
At the Damon system due to the self-locking principle the friction is much smaller, thus with 400-600 times smaller forces can move the teeth. Thus biologically the treatment is much appropriate for the teeth and for the periodontal, easier to get used to and wear the device. The treatment is faster with it, than with the traditional fixed device, due to the large lateral dilatation capability huge degree of congestions can solve without tooth removal and very beautiful aesthetic result can achieve. In adulthood without tooth extraction and mandible surgery may solve the cases of 90-95% in the case of bite deviation. Due to the soft forces the periodontal react much better to the treatment and due to the lack of the rubber fastening elements – which are constantly exposed to bacteria corrosion in the mouth (the food residues adhere easily on them), easier to keep it clean than the traditional devices.
From medical aspect the Damon system is today the best orthodontic device, in metal (Damon-MX) and more aesthetic (Damon-3) design! The Damon system’s partial fixed device is the D-Gainer device which is used in mixed dentition for the purpose of dilatation/ space expansion, where only on the incisor teeth are brackets, and on the first molar teeth there are tubes, and between the part of the two tooth group with the help of the push spring placed to the arch can create space. The habituation time of the device system is usually 3-5 days, in worst case it is one week. During the treatment the so called activations (control, arch changes, etc.) happens 2 monthly in the treatment’s first 8-10 month, after this it happens monthly. At D-Gainer treatment the activations happen 2 monthly.
Damon-Insignia virtual treatment plan and individualized device
In the Damon technique there is a possibility to exploit the today’s most developed orthodontic technique, this is the Damon-Insignia system. Its essence is that after the patient’s treatment plan made in the surgery, we take extremely accurate silicone impressions, we send them to the company Ormco’s Californian laboratory where they scan the impressions, and thus virtually display the dentures. After this the doctor with the help of software, from the internet downloaded patient’s scanned material, he/she plans virtually the teeth’ final position and set the bite, which wants to achieve at the end of the treatment. Thus the teeth’ movement can present like a movie from the beginning of the treatment to the end, before the gluing also for the patient. After the preparation of the virtual treatment plan, the normal Damon brackets and the smaller but more convenient tubes in the laboratory perfectly, they can position them 100 % to the teeth, and they send them in a so called transmission splint to the surgery, with the help of this we glue with so called indirect gluing. Every Insignia patient gets appropriate to the virtual plan, completely individualized arch. Thus with the Damon-Insignia system in one hand relative to the normal – positioned by the doctor, so called direct adhesively glued – Damon devices, due to the indirect glued brackets and tubes’ perfect position the result will be more beautiful, in the other hand the individualized arches allow that the treatment’s certain phases happens faster, thus the treatment plan is also shorter.
