Around Lake Balaton
The Balaton, in its nickname the "Hungarian sea" is the largest lake of Central Europe. It is 77 km long, its width varies between 1.3-14 km, an average it is 7.8 km, its surface area is 594 km².
The Tihany peninsula separates its eastern basin from the other parts of the lake. In the southern shore its lake bed is shallower. In its northern side located the Badacsony wine region and the basin of Tapolca with its volcanic mountains. In some parts of the lake fishing is going on, for fishing license is required. There are wakeboard paths in Siófok, Vonyarcvashegy, and also in Balatonfüred. Around the lake from several towns start scheduled, regular ferry services, and different type of ships.
Africa Museum
The museum surrounded with safari park is associated with Dr. Nagy Endre, an African researcher. In the museum there are Tanzanian collections, hunting trophies, cultic objects of African tribes, folk carvings, and functional products, allowing insight into the culture of a distant world. In the safari park we can meet with African animals – camel, buffalo and zebra – but typical Hungarian animals also can be seen.
Folly Arboretum
The park is located on 5 hectares on which rare collection of trees can admire the visitors. A little taste of the park’s collection: slender cypresses, exotic sage green Atlantic cedars, giant pines, firs, scales and coniferous junipers.
Hegyestű – Geological exhibition place
It is primarily recommended for hikers, because we can get there only with bicycle or on foot. Hegyestű can be found 337 meters above the sea level. In Hungary and also in Europe its stone columns are unique. In the old yard of mine geological, nature reserve, and mining history presentation awaits the visitors.
Basalt organ of Szent György’s Hill
One of the most beautiful examples found here on the side of basalt cups the spilling lava’s solidified columns. The stone columns are sometimes similar to the organ pipe, elsewhere stand alone. On the mountain beautiful view is offered.
Castle of Szigliget
On the top of hill a 13. century fortress is located, from which the view is spectacular to the surrounding towns and lake.
Csodabogyós – cave
The cave with its 3 km length is the third longest cave in Transdanubia. It is characterized by extraordinary richness of stalactite. There are two types of tours: the basic tour is 2-3 hours long, the extreme tour is 4 hours long.
Religious homes in Tihany
In Central Europe unique cave homes, chapel, and dining hall was built by the Greek rite hermits into the rock face in the XI-XIV century.
