City of Pécs
The city of Mediterranean atmosphere: The title "stuck" to Pécs after a slogan of a successful tender. Pécs is a two thousand years old city which is one of the most important cultural and intellectual center of Hungary.
The capital of culture
Pécs has been the European Capital of Culture in 2010 – together with Istanbul and Essen. As a result of this title a lot of new centers were build up, such as the South Transdanubian Regional Library and Knowledge Center which serves as the city’s university library, the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, and the Kodály Centre which usually hosts concerts. By 2010 several parks and public spaces were become more beautiful which have positive impact on the overall picture of the city. This honorable title has launched huge developments in the city. New hotels and office buildings were built.
The capital of science
The University of Pécs is the oldest university of the country (1376), which operates with 34,000 students. The students may also obtain college (BA,BSc), master (MA,MSc), and doctorate (PHD,DLA) diploma. Thanks to the dynamic, interoperable higher education system, the university has a lot of foreign students.
