How do we carry out the root canal treatment?

First we have to find the input of the channel which occurs with traditional drilling. Usually the incisor teeth have 1-1 root-canal, in the case of the upper left and right first premolar have 2, the others have 1, but this is just the high average, it is possible that one canal has, but it is branching or 2 completely separate has. The molar teeth have 3 or 4 canals.

If we found all of them, make sure that they are permeable? Then we have to determine how long they are, whit a directly crafted tool. If we measured, we have to clean which the doctor carry out with grating the infected tooth material from the wall of the canal with little rasps. At the same time he/she expands the canal, preparing for the filling.

If he/she thoroughly cleaned and expanded it, then close it temporarily which is used to disinfect the canal, or even in the same seat stuffs it. The filling of root-canal is good if it is sealed hermetically on all sides and the filling fills the canal. At the end the doctor checks it with X-ray.

Each step happens under local anesthesia!

For patients, root canal therapy is one of the most feared procedures, but opposed to common belief modern treatments are relatively painless. Here you can read step by step description of a successful root canal therapy.

After the diagnosis is clear and root canal treatment is recommended to save a tooth, our dentist will take a dental x-ray to determine the number and shape of its roots. Local anesthetics is used to make the procedure pain-free. Although, when the area around the tooth is swollen, it is best to drain the fluid from the area first, therefore releasing the pressure that causes the pain. Our dentist then prescribes a week of antibiotics, which will reduce the infection. One of the most important things in root canal therapy is to isolate the treated tooth and provide a clean and hygienic environment. In order to achieve this, our dentists use a rubber dam, called Kofferdamm.

After removing the infected pulp, our dentist tracks the canal entry opening and measures its length with a device called apex locator. The advantages of this tool over x-ray is, that it is faster, there is no radiation and it can be used when treating pregnant women.

In the next step, the root canal is cleaned, sterilised and widened with a hand or electric tool. Once that is done, our dentist fills the cavity with a special material and seals the opening. Following a successful root canal therapy, the treated tooth will be painless again and will regain its full chewing function.

What kind of problems can arise during the treatment?

The most common is the sensitivity or even the pain. This could be after the temporary closure for a few days, but after the final filling too, and may take up to 1-2 weeks. Firstly due to the fact that the chronic inflammation flares up and becomes acute. When treating the dead tooth can also happen that abscess is formed. In this case the doctor writes anti-inflammatory drug, possibly opens the abscess. In most cases it is only that we try to clean the canal in a narrow space with a very thin instrument, and inevitably happens that in this narrow place the needle squeezing the infected material on that small opening which is located in the end of the canal, around the root space causing there inflammation and sensitivity.

Is it painful the root canal treatment?

It is important to inform the patient to prepare itself to the expected discomfort, because on the one hand it does not reach him/her suddenly and doesn’t think that it means wrong. In this case the patient should be reassured that it is normal and it doesn’t recommended the well cleaned and sealed canals opening and the inoculation by the saliva, because then we have to start the cleaning again. Every time when the canal is opened, as often may become infected. Therefore it is advisable to carry out the tooth during minimized visit which can happen in one seat, but maximum in two. The most important is that every step happens under total anesthesia.
