The task of prosthesis is not only replacing the missing teeth, but treatment of functional and aesthetic disorders due to tooth loss, and the prevention of disorders because of later tooth loss. As a result of tooth loss the denture unit is disrupted also. In the denture some tooth losses lead to movement of teeth, and migration, causing further problems.
Most common causes of tooth loss:
- tooth decay
- age-related atrophy of mandibles
- periodontal inflammation
- trauma
The consequences of tooth loss:
- reduction of chewing capacity
- changes in facial expression
- development of psychological inhibitions
- reduced working capacity (teachers, musicians)
- articulation disorder
- loss delimiter teeth’ migration, movement
- elevation of the remaining teeth
- aesthetic disadvantages
- mandible joint pain in long-term, and digestive disorders may occur
- overloading and wear of remaining teeth
- periodontal damage, then another tooth losses
The prosthesis can be divided into two major groups:
- fixed restorations (crown, bridge, root canal pivots, implants)
- removable restorations (partial and full dentures)
Tasks of restorations:
- restore chewing ability
- improve aesthetic disadvantages
- restore harmony of face
- elimination of speech disorder
Fixed restorations:
Fixed restorations are the well prepared restorations for the remaining teeth, or the fixed restorations to implants which can’t remove from the mouth. Medical help is needed for their removal! You never try to remove the fixed restoration. The fixed restoration damages during the removal, therefore the removed denture cannot put back to the mouth.
Types of fixed restorations:
- crown
- bridge
- root canal pivot
- zirconium restoration (metal free)
